Rainer Maria Rilke antwortet im hier edierten Briefwechsel zunachst nur auf die Fragen, die die 22-jahrige Charlotte Hepner zum Verstandnis des 1910 erschienenen Romans Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge stellt. Die durchaus selbstbewusste junge Frau aus judischer Familie setzt den Briefwechsel fort, der schnell zu weiteren literarischen Themen fuhrt, zu Rilkes Hinweisen auf die Erzahlungen von Tolstoi und zu Thesen des Berliner Psychologen Wilhelm Fliess. Bei der ersten Ausgabe dieser Briefe (1933) wurde der Name der Briefpartnerin mit L. H. verschlusselt und seit 1996 mit Lotte Heppner wiedergegeben. Mit der vollstandigen Ausgabe der Korrespondenz wird dies korrigiert und auch Rilkes deutliche Briefbemerkungen zu Heldentum und Krieg erstmals zuganglich. Sie zeigen die kritische Position des Dichters zum Ersten Weltkrieg.>
