1920: Battles to defeat 19th Amendment, Author Kathi Kern, "Mrs Stanton's Bible," wrote
"The [Part I,1st edition] Woman's Bible proved to be the most devastating weapon in the antisuffragist arsenal. Twenty-five years after it first appeared in print, The Woman's Bible still wreaked political havoc among supporters of woman's rights."
TIMELINE: NOV 1895, Woman's Bible Part I, 1st ed released. STANTON WROTE,
"I do not believe that God inspired Mosaic code or told historians what they say he did about woman, for all religions on earth degrade her, and so long as woman accepts the position they assign her, her emancipation is impossible. Whatever the BIBLE may be made to do in Hebrew or Greek, in plain English it DOES NOT EXALT AND DIGNIFY WOMAN."
1896 JAN. Clergy declared, "A BOOK OF INFIDELITY, A BITTER ATTACK UPON CHRISTIANITY."
NAWSA Washington, DC Convention, members resolved "That this Association is non-sectarian, being composed of persons of all shades of religious opinion, and that it has no official connection with the so-called "Woman's Bible,'" or any theological publication."
1896 MAR 2. Letter, Stanton to son Theodore, "the action in Washington sold off the edition in a twinkling and we are getting ready for second edition."
1896 APR. Part I, 2nd ed. released w/Mrs Catt's name replaced by Clara Neymann.
1920 JUL/AUG, 25 YRS LATER. Tennessee's ratification 19th Amendment. At ANTI-SUFFRAGISTS headquarters Nashville, exhibited 3 original 1895 1st Edition Woman's Bibles Part I and produced WOMAN'S BIBLE broadsides & newspaper ads, inviting Clergy and all to "COME AND SEE THE WOMAN'S BIBLE."
ANTIS ALLEGED NAWSA's then PRESIDENT CATT, listed as member of Revising Committee in 1st ed., was aligned with Stanton's anti-Christian sentiments!
NEWSPAPERS REPORTED STORMY DISCOURSE RE CATT AND ANTIs! (See newspapers. com). CATT'S DENIAL, reported in newspaper:
"I was never a member of "revising committee" for the Woman's Bible. Although asked to be, I declined. Any printing of my name in connection with the book has been without my knowledge or consent."
Newspapers reported NASHVILLE CLERGY reaction: "The original Woman's Bibles on exhibit at anti-ratification headquarters are exciting tremendous interest among clergy, someone constantly examining its pages, one of whom, an editor of a religious weekly, has used it again AS IT WAS USED IN 1896 as an argument against suffrage leadership and feminist doctrines."
