Americanized and expanded from the British version, this delightful reference with some 70,000 entries, serves more than one purpose. It finds the precise word you want ( factitious under "fake," atomiser under "spray"); it teaches you new words ( eudonia under "Aristotle," deipnosophist under "dinner table"); it lists related terms (ballet steps, architectural words); and it illustrates varieties and parts (cheese, the ear, heraldry, papal vestments). It is sometimes quirky ("garden predators" are illustrated under "garden") and sometimes incomplete (only 19 words are listed under "Spanish terms"; only 20 dogs are shown under "dogs"), but it does more than a thesaurus and is lots of fun for just browsing.
