This workbook accompanies the Reading Comprehension: Level I course in the MiaPrep, Miacademy, Always Icecream, and Clever Dragons online curriculum. It is a compilation of all student PDF assignments for the course and is suggested for grade 8 students.

Course Description:

Reading Comprehension: Level I offers an opportunity for students to read a variety of texts and practice their reading comprehension skills. Each lesson includes an online assessment to allow students to evaluate and enhance their existing skills. Rather than directly teaching comprehension techniques, the focus of this course is on providing reading opportunities and reflective activities that will help students support and refine the skills they are learning in the comprehensive Language Arts courses.

This course is split into five units, focusing on the genres of fiction, literary nonfiction, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. We recommend scheduling this course one day per week for 36 weeks, although the course structure can be adjusted to fit your needs.

Students can use the activities in this book to prime their thinking before reading, annotate the text during reading, and finally reflect and apply comprehension skills to the text after reading. These activities are designed to help students think about the text and prepare to demonstrate their comprehension skills in the online assessment. Before starting the online assessment, students can read the passage or scan a QR code to listen to an audio recording of the reading. Alternatively, they can read the text directly within the assessment as they answer questions.
