_____In 1859 Riley and a group of 36 freighters ran an ox and mule train from Missouri to Utah._____ The train, organized by Hoard and Dixon of Independence, was hauling freight for the US Army posts at Salt Lake City and Provo._____ His descriptions of the subsequent experiences on the Platte River route are very well written. _____ The trip was a success and he describes Salt Lake City and the Mormons. _____ Riley's recollections also include the Kansas-Missouri border troubles, experiences with Quantrill's men, several trips to Fort Union, Indian troubles, an 1861 trip over the Santa Fe trail to Fort Lyon, Colorado and much more. _____ Issued by the family in what was almost certainly a very limited quantity. _____ Not in Flake, Rittenhouse/Santa Fe Trail or Mattes/Platte River. _____ WorldCat locates just four holdings. _____ Laid in at the rear is a long newspaper review, which has tanned the adjacent leaves. _____ ._____.
