Generally found in 3 volumes, this copy has been bound into one and retains the half-titles to volumes 1 and 3 (one to vol 2 not being issued)as well as the title pages to all three volumes. The handsome, polished, black half-leather binding is contemporary with the date of publication and has raised bands, gilt decoration and gilt titles on a contrasting red leather title panel on the spine. Marbled boards. The binding in very good condition, with only trivial rubbing of the extremities. There is partial cracking of the front hinge, but this is unobtrusive and the binding is verty secure. The text, too, is in very good order, tight and clean, with only a hint of age-browning and just a very small ink mark on the blank margin of 2 pages. See photosa to assess condition. On the front paste-down end paper is the old label of George Gregory, Bookseller to HM Queen Alexandra (wife of George V), bath. Altogether an excellent copy of the first edition. (R-37).
