FIRST EDITION; leather-bound, hardcover, octavo (22cm x 14cm x 4cm), pp. x, 382, [6] advertisements. English text with illustrations and maps throughout. Handsomely rebound in half calf gilt by Bayntun-Riviere, cloth sides, t.e.g., marbled endpapers, half-title, 12 full-page illustrations, 9 in the text illustrations, 3 maps/plans. Printed by Spottiswoode & Co. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure. Mottling to cloth sides, the covers otherwise excellent. The interior very well-preserved. Armorial bookplate to front pastedowns. A beautiful copy. Notes: Adye was in the Royal Artillery, and served in the Crimea, the Mutiny, the North-West Frontier, Bhutan and Egypt, becoming Governor of Gibraltar. See Riddick 268.
