Complete run of five issues of The Monthly Recorder, a magazine founded by William Dunlap (1766-1839), painter, dramatist, and important chronicler of the burgeoning arts in the new United States. It quickly failed and drained his already perilous finances. The five numbers were then collected in book form with an added title page reading "A Record, Literary and Political, of Five Months in the Year 1813, by William Dunlap and Others." and published for the proprietor (Dunlap) by David Carlisle. This copy is bound in half-calf and mottled boards, and has, in addition to a leather title label on the spine the words "Columbian Society" lettered in gilt at the base of the spine. Laid in is a 1923 letter from the noted Americana dealer Oscar Wegelin, offering a customer a copy for $20, complete with the four portraits ("often missing'"), and noting that it is one of the rarest Dunlap titles. Our copy has three of the four portraits, lacking the one of General Zebulon Pike; Pike had recently been killed in battle in Upper Canada. Wegelin's letter further states that his copy begins on p. 5, as does this one, "but it is complete, unless it had a paper cover." He does not mention the added title page, so his copy may have been one bound from the individual numbers; even so, the title page would only be pp. [1-2].
