The Rector

1970 FIRST EDITION (U.K.) hardcover with dust jacket. UNREAD COPY with unmarked pages. Glossy illustrated jacket shows minor shelf-rubbing only. This is NOT an ex-library book and not a remainder. Nice copy of an uncommon First Edition novel. "Mary, the daughter of a well-known Yorkshire novelist, is engaged to Christopher, the local Rector. These two men have to grapple with the full impact of Mary's unprecedented announcement: 'I have conceived of God.' To her father, Tony, a self-liberated Bohemian, Mary's immaculate conception is credible, for to him she is an honest person who could never be otherwise but true to herself. But, to Christopher, suddenly confronted with just the sort of 'miracle' he has been self-consciously advocating, the implications of her claim are so awesome that he cannot digest them. They shatter his previously crystallised system of beliefs. His reaction is schizophrenic.".
