The author's earliest crime novel featuring Dr. John Evelyn Thorndyke, "the only convincing scientific investigator in detective fiction" (Norman Donaldson in "St. James Guide to Crime & Mystery Writers," p. 384). The evidence of the crime centers around a single thumb print, one of the earliest examples in fiction of fingerprints used as evidence. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone crime novel.
