Small octavo; publisher's black pictorial cloth stamped in white and red with the image of a thumbprint; [8],232pp.; frontispiece signed in image by T.E. Francis. Margins rubbed with brief exposure at corners and spine ends, whit cover lettering quite significantly flecked, spine lettering entirely effaced, hairline crack to front hinge, textblock uniformly toned, else a Good to Very Good, clean copy. The author's earliest crime novel featuring Dr. John Evelyn Thorndyke, "the only convincing scientific investigator in detective fiction" (Norman Donaldson in "St. James Guide to Crime & Mystery Writers," p. 384). The evidence of the crime centers around a single thumb print, one of the earliest examples in fiction of fingerprints used as evidence. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone crime novel.
