Scarce first edition of this anonymously published early work by John Fletcher (d. 1848), Roman Catholic priest and religious writer, later published as part of his 1812 'Sermons' (Gillow vol. II p. 299). The lawyer and writer Charles Butler (nephew of Alban Butler) compared Fletcher's writings to the homilies of St Francis of Sales, and praised 'their mild, unambitious eloquence, their pure morality, and their persuasive reasoning' (Historical Memoirs vol.
