~Original full polished mottled calf, gilt frames to boards, gilt decor and lettering to spine, rubbed. Gilt decor to board edges. Mild wear to board corners and top spine. All edges speckled blue, faded. Small shelf label near top spine. 8vo (13.5 x 21.6cm). Cracking just starting to endpapers over front inner hinge only, but hinges firm. Decorative endpieces. A little scattered foxing. Errata to final page of text. Scarce first edition of this anonymously published early work by John Fletcher (d. 1848), Roman Catholic priest and religious writer, later published as part of his 1812 'Sermons' (Gillow vol. II p. 299). The lawyer and writer Charles Butler (nephew of Alban Butler) compared Fletcher's writings to the homilies of St Francis of Sales, and praised 'their mild, unambitious eloquence, their pure morality, and their persuasive reasoning' (Historical Memoirs vol.
