Newspaper column of a poem by Mrs. Elijah H. Downing laid in. Joshua Wells Downing (1813-1839), b. Lynn, MA; d. Boston, MA. At seventeen years of age he became a law student at Brown University. His conversion led him into the Methodist ministry, and he served at Randolph, MA, and at Salem, MA, becoming pastor of the Broomfield St. church in Boston in 1838. He died from a respiratory illness the following year, greatly lamented.The book has the memoir, five full sermons and forty-two "Notes of Sermons," basically sermon outlines. There are also four orations, Hostility to Truth, delivered at Brown University; Valedictory Address, given at Salem; Intellectual Improvement, a lecture delivered in the Odeon at Boston; and a Speech on the occasion of the death of Rev. Dr. Fisk. Also, a collection of letters to his parents, his brother [the editor of this book], Miss Mary Ann Mudge [whom he married in 1838], to Rev. Abel Stevens, to Mr. James Pool, to Mr. Oliver A.
