16pp. Octavo [22 cm] pamphlet; one large folded sheet, uncut and unsewn. Very minor and occasional staining or smudging around edges of the first and last page; else Near Fine. This is the first edition of this work with the first word of line 5 from bottom of p.1: "pleted". We can locate four institutional holdings of this item at the time of cataloguing. Rare. Two later editions of this work were printed in the same year (see Crawley, items 406-408). According to Crawley, "Orson's 'Reply to a Pamphlet' is largely a point-by-point response and for the most part avoids an exchange or of optics Epithets even as it comments on Paton's lapses in logic or misreadings of 'Divine Authority.' When Paton, for example, declares that "it is one of the established laws of optics, that no mortal eye can, by any possibility, see a spirit," Orson constrains himself to calling Paton sarcastically a "sage philosopher" and asks, "Will this very wise author be so kind as to inform the public by whom this 'law of optics' was discovered, and by what process of reason and demonstration it became an established law?" 'Reply to a Pamphlet' has more than a page in defense of the belief that the Aaronic Priesthood is everlasting and its reestablishment on earth is predicted in the scriptures, and more than four pages in support of the Mormon interpretation of Isiah 29, Ezekial 37, and Revelation 14:6. For a refutation of the Spaulding-Rigdon theory, it refers the reader to Parley Pratt's 'Reply to C.S, Bush' and John Taylor's 'Answer to Rev. Robert Heys.'" Crawley 406. Flake/Draper 6537.
