First edition, second state. 72 pp., folding map. This report contains the first American railroad map, "Plan of a Survey for the Proposed Boston and Providence Rail-Way." Removed from larger volume, untrimmed edges, ex-library with perforated stamp on title page and small rubber stamp on verso of map. Modelski (US) 348: "The earliest railroad map in Library's collections." This copy has the document number on the title page and no erratum. The text on page 37 has been corrected. The map was lithographed by Annin & Smith, proprietors of the Senedfelder Lithography Company. This firm was taken over by Williams Pendleton in 1830. As the first American railroad map, this item would be a critical component of any collection of American cartography or railroads of the 19th century.
