William Kilty served as an army surgeon during the Revolutionary war and was one of the founders of the Society of the Cincinnati. He entered the Maryland bar and began publication of his multi-volume *The Laws of Maryland* in 1799. He served as chief judge of the Washington circuit court, and became chancellor of Maryland in 1806.
