152pp. Quarto [30 cm] Original dark brown cloth with gilt title to backstrip. Front endpaper cracked along the hinge. Light internal foxing. With eleven color lithographic plates of scenery (all with tissue guards), three black and white landscape plates, and eight black and white fossil plates. Large folding map present at rear, with periodic tears to the edges and folds. The longest tear is split, measuring roughly 6" deep. This publication is considered by many to be a geographical continuation of the Ives report, although the gap of the Grand Canyon is not filled in. Newberry was the geologist for both expeditions. According to Farquhar, "The Lithograph of Shiprock is one of the most pleasing of the scenic views made in that epoch."
