Item description from seller

The first edition of this work discussing the creation of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, which aimed to provide relief for the poor of England. The first edition of this work, discussing the Poor Law Commission, and it's creation in the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, which led to the establishment of workhouses. This was known as the New Poor Law, replacing the Old Poor law of 1601.The Poor Laws was a tax on property imposed in each parish, used to try and relieve poverty. This work analyses how the Poor Laws protected that poor, and how the law actually worked in providing relief to the poor. The last one-hundred and twenty-eight pages are supplements and an index. Rebacked, with the original cloth boards restored. Externally, smart. Internally, firmly bound. Significant spotting throughout, most concentrated to the first and last few leaves. Very Good.
