Original boards, printed paper label. Spine very faintly creased, edges of boards slightly darkened, corners bumped, some spotting of endpapers and prelims. With the bookplate of John Clay. The Second Report, as issued ("Price 10s. boards"), paginating, as usual, [2], 2, [2], 195-608, [2] + 8pp. publisher's advertisements - p. [193] with the title "SECOND REPORT", p. 195 opening with minutes starting 3 June; oddly omitting the First Report (though the index extends to earlier pages). Henry Brougham (the future Baron Brougham and Vaux, 1778-1868) was the chairman of the committee - inquiring into every charity school in London, the detailed evidence here presented. Brougham's work led, eventually, to the establishment of the Charity Commission but not, to his chagrin, to the state education proposed by parliamentary bills in 1820 and 1837.
