Green was the first American physician to specialize in diseases of the throat, and his 1846 publication, Treatise on Diseases of the Air Passages, was attacked for its assertions that topical medication could be introduced into the throat by means of a probang. "In pointing out . the value of applying solutions of silver nitrate locally in catarrhal inflammation of the pharynx and larynx he made a fundamental contribution" (DAB).
