Rebound by amateur binder. Moderate foxing, quite heavy to the plates. Engraved title trimmed slightly without loss of printed area. Some small 1/4" chips and dampstains to margins of frontispiece. ; Uncommon. 560 pages + engraved title + plates. Rebound by amateur binder in half-leather binding. Marbled boards. Later endpapers. Page dimensions: 217 x 131mm. The "List of Embellishments" lists 48 illustrations, which are all present. These are a mix of engraved plates and in-text woodcut illustrations. The plate called for facing page 533 has been bound in as the frontispiece. A compendium of extracts on literature, travel, and biography, with some editorial comment. Pages 412-420 include extracts from John Franklin's "A Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea". "We never remember to have read a narrative more full of suffering and privation than that of Captain Franklin; and, at the same time, one which places the character of ther persons exposed to them in so respectable a light [. . .] The influence of religion in the human mind is here displayed in a most striking manner, and without any of that cant which sometimes makes it disgusting, and oftener doubtful" - page 420.
