Harold Nicholson's copy, signed and dated October 1930 on the front paste down, so assume to be the first UK edition. No date on title page.
Red cloth covered boards; front panel has gilt and black stamped "Rome" and black edges on the upper and lower edges, gilt lettering on spine. Upper external page edges are black. Spine is sunned; edges at head and tail of spine are lightly crimped and upper edge has a 1/8" closed tear at the center. Side and lower edges are age-toned and with very faint foxing. FFEP has several penciled notes regarding Harold Nicholson association, also faint pencil erasures. Minimal foxing on text pages, light foxing on end-papers and several first and last pages. Internally clean and with snug text block.
Cream paper dust jacket with red lettering on front panel and spine. Dust jacket is soiled and sunned overall, sunning more heavily on extremities and heavily on spine. Upper edge at head of jacket spine is chipped, rubbed and with several small vertical closed tears; front and back corners have loss of approx. 1/4". Tail of jacket spine is rubbed and chipped and back corner has a 1/2" closed vertical tear along the back spine fold. Front jacket panel has a 1 3/8" closed vertical tear in the lower right corner. Upper edge of back jacket panel has several closed vertical tears of up to 1/4". Upper edge of front jacket panel has shallow horizontal creasing, small chips and rubs; upper right front fore-edge corner is rubbed. Inside front flap of dust jacket has a 2 1/2" by 1 1/2" slightly rough corner clip in the lower corner.
