The first US edition of this collection of four short stories by British journalist and diplomatOswald Crawfurd.First published in England the previous year, this first US edition was the only to feature Oswald's introduction, the main part of which is the Sherlockian short story 'Our Mr. Smith', featuring the character Purlock Hone.Crawfurd's collection contains four further short stories: 'Gentleman Goggins', 'The Flying Man', 'The Murder at Jex Farm', and 'The Kidnapped Children'.British crime writer Anthony Berkeley Cox's personal copy, with his inscription, dated 1923, to the head of the front free endpaper. Berkeley Cox published a number of Roger Sheringham detective novels, and his best remembered for novels including 'The Silk Stocking Murders' and 'The Piccadilly Murder'. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial onlay to front board. Discolouration to back strip, with bumping to spine head. Front hinge slightly starting, with board holding firm.
