Rezanov by Gertrude Atherton with and introduction by William Marion Reedy. First Modern Library Edition. Copyright 1919 Boni & Liveright has been blacked out by the publisher and replaced with a stamp of Copyright 1906 Gertrude Atherton - VERY UNUSUAL. This is an extremely rare Modern Library first in dust jacket. Bound in dark blue imitation leather (spine #1), the book is in NEAR FINE condition with virtually no external wear besides the slightest of shelf wear. Brodzky endpapers. Solid binding, very bright gilt, blue topstain faded. APPEARS UNREAD! THIS INCLUDES THE VERY SHORTLIVED BRODZKY FRONTISPIECE AND TITLE PAGE DESIGN. From the great Scot Kamins Modern Library collecting web site: Horace Brodzky won the contest that Boni & Liveright ran in 1919 to find the best end paper design "interpreting the spirit and character of the Modern Library." (Publisher's Weekly, 03/08/1919) As well as designing the end paper, Brodzky also came up with a frontispiece (the illustrated design facing the title page?in this case with a brief bio of the author) and a title page design, both of which were meant to be used in all ML titles. It didn't work out. The pieces were used in the first editions of several 1919 titles, including this one. A glance at the design will demonstrate why it lasted less than a year :)

The dust jacket is VERY GOOD with chipping at spine extremities and spine darkening otherwise AMAZINGLY BRIGHT AND CLEAN. The list of titles on the flaps and rear panel includes those from 1924, but not 1925 making this a 1924 type b4 dust jacket. Now protected in an archival-quality dust jacket protector. VERY HARD TO FIND.
