Oblong 4to. First edition. Original quarter cloth with matt-laminated paper boards printed in three colours. text in English and German. Illustrated throughout in black and white including 35 full page. Spine slightly foxed. Book label of E. W. Sweet and Tiranti Art Bookshop label on the front pastedown. Contents clean. Slipcase partially tanned. Near fine. From the collection of Eric Sweet (1929-2024) a keen collector of Fable and Private Press books from his youngest years until his 90s, and a lifelong student of the book arts: paper, type, illustration and bookbinding. His career began at Brighton College of Art in the 1950s. He then spent some years in London as a lettering artist and typographer for various advertising agencies before a move to Birmingham where he became head of the Birmingham School of Printing. From the folded prospectus loosely inserted in the book: 'A book of the greatest importance for the theory and aesthetics of letterforms. A work which shows through a detailed analysis the original foundations which had been misunderstood for centuries. A text-book which surpasses by far all previous efforts in the field of creative lettering.' Uncommon. Seller Inventory # 8603
