In a chatty narrative that uses a fictional horse, Primo, as the equine partner, Kirksmith describes a program to learn Western riding. The information covers a broad scope, from first encounters through handling, tack, aids, seat, gaits, and riding pleasures. Experienced riders may question the depth of instruction, which covers in detail some areas beyond the beginner level (use of draw reins, lateral movements) while others seem somewhat sketchy (use of the bosal, safety while leading the horse). The tone is encouraging, as it emphasizes positive thinking and a patient, methodical approach.
