About this Item
Octavo, terra-cotta with black cover and spine designs, spine-lettered in gilt; bookplate removed from the front pastedown leaving a slight trace, otherwise a gorgeous copy. First edition, first issue, with "Mr. Howell's Latest Works" on the front advertisement and the last word on page 176 with perfect type (unlike subsequent issues). BAL 9619 ---- From the library of Richard Watson Gilder, with his distinct library bookplate on the front endpaper. Gilder, an accomplished poet, was the longtime editor of Century Magazine, where Howells occasionally contributed essays and where Gilder had actually serialized "Silas Lapham." A scarce work with a distinguished provenance. Seller Inventory # ABE-7871377693
