About this Item
The scarce first edition thus of this collection of poems from Canadian poet Oliver Goldsmith, in the publisher's original moire binding. Best known for the titular poem, 'The Rising Village', which was first published in 1825 in London, this edition altered that poem and combined it with other examples of Goldsmith's work, and was published in his native New Brunswick. This has been described as 'the first volume of verse ever published in Canada by a native-born Canadian to receive serious attention at the hands of critics and literary historians'.With the armorial bookplate of Gilmour of Lundin and Montrave to the front pastedown. Sir John Gilmour, 4th Baronet, was a military officer who served in the Fife Yeomanry. The titular poem, curiously, is a response to the 'The Deserted Village', a celebrated poem from his great-uncle, the Anglo-Irish novelist also names Oliver Goldsmith, best known for penning 'The Vicar of Wakefield'. In the publisher's original moire covered boards. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Front joint starting, with board holding firm. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Tide mark to tail of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 820F9
