About this Item
Octavo, 569pp. Very good or better in the publisher's grey printed wraps. Spine mildly cupped and age-toned, with a few tiny creases to the wraps. Contents clean and unmarked. Stamp of Crane's Duplicating Service in Barnstable, Mass. to the interior rear wrapper. Extremely uncommon uncorrected proof copy of one of the most celebrated and influential novels of the 20th century, which spent nearly a year at number 1 on the New York Times Best-Seller List, won the Pulitzer Prize, and was adapted into a very popular miniseries the next year. Some differences we note between the proof and the first trade printing are the blank "Acknowledgements" page, a full sentence later removed from the Dedication (in the proof, it reads: "Just by chance [Roots] is being published in the Bicentennial Year of the United States." Spot-checking did not reveal any obvious differences in the narrative text between the two formats. However, the proof came in at 569 hand-numbered pages, while the final trade printing came in at 587 pages, suggesting that there may be some differences in the text. Not traced at auction, and considerably rarer than the first trade printing. Seller Inventory # 11888
