About this Item
A superior copy of Zelie Colvile's travelogue describing her time exploring Africa with her husband, lavishly illustrated throughout. This work describes the author's circumnavigation of Africa and the people encountered there. Her journey was undertaken in 1888 and 1889 across eight months.Written by Zelie Colvile, the aristocratic wife of a prominent British soldier.A first edition, lavishly illustrated with photographs, line drawings, a map in colour, and a map in a pocket to the rear of the work. The cover depicts a cartoon which satirizes the fight for ownership of Africa by European leaders. With a prize bookplate from the Poland Street Institute awarded to Frederick Dawson dated 1898.An excellent copy of this uncommon work. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart; a little bumped to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound, with slight straining to both hinges. Pages have just the odd spot. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 801R33
