Hugo Fitzduane killed a notorious international terrorist in Games of the Hangman (1991). Now Japanese terrorists bent on revenge attack Fitzduane and his three-year-old son on their private island off the coast of Ireland. After recovering from his wounds, Fitzduane takes his personal war to the enemy's turf and finds he must battle a byzantine alliance of top government officials, rogue CIA spooks, captains of Japanese industry, organized crime, and political terrorists. Fitzduane's wry humor in the face of grisly and lingering death is overripe, but the sense of Tokyo, Japanese society, and the action scenes is first-rate. Fans of Trevanian, Follett, Forsyth, Ludlum, and Clancy will thank librarians for recommending O'Reilly. Thomas Gaughan
Fans of Nelson DeMille and David Morrell will be overjoyed: With this second novel and sequel to Games of the Hangman (Berkeley, 1992), O'Reilly joins the selective list of must-buy intrigue authors. Well written, well paced, and delightfully readable, this novel offers major and minor characters who are believable and three-dimensional if not necessarily likable. Hugo Fitzduane, Anglo-Irish nobleman and retired war photographer/warrior, is attacked and left for dead while horseback riding with his beloved three-year-old son, Boots. In Games of the Hangman, Hugo had killed the mastermind of international terrorist groups, and now the Cutting Edge, a Japanese-based group, seeks revenge for their leader's murder. Hugo's romantic attachments lend a nice touch of humanity to the text. Librarians who do not purchase Rules are denying their readers a first-rate treat by an excellent author.
