269 pages with diagrams and index. Small Octavo (7 1/4" x 5") recased in red cloth with gilt lettering to spine with original publisher's cover laid-on. Christmas greeting tipped in. White's Christmas series volume XIII. (Betts: 31-7) First edition. Introduction and table of contents in English and German; remaining text in English. The introduction consists of an essay on the development of chess problems, how "two main types of accumulation have marked the progress of composition during the last fifty years: on the one hand, the pursuit of variations, that is the accumulation of different elements in one problem; and, on the other hand, the pursuit of echoes, that is the accumulation of similar elements in one problem". 300 problems (s00 sets of 3) are devoted to these "tasks" and "echoes", grouped under twenty one main thematic ideas, and discussed with solutions. Condition: Recased with new end papers, some pencil check-marks else a very good copy.
