Item description from seller

Publication: Kelso, John Rutherfurd, 1849 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [viii], 136. Condition Report: Good. The book is bound in its original blind-stamped green cloth, which has uniformly sunned to a warm brown across the spine and board margins. The binding remains structurally sound and tight, though there is evident rubbing to the extremities, mild bumping to the corners, and minor fraying at the spine ends. Internally, the original endpapers show some moderate, patchy foxing. The text block and steel engravings exhibit scattered age-toning and foxing, typical for regional publications of this era, yet the plates remain sharply detailed. All pages and leaves appear present, free from major tears or significant loss, presenting an honest, acceptable copy of a scarce provincial guide. Catalogue Note: First edition. This charming regional guide provides an insightful look into the Scottish Borders during the mid-nineteenth century, spurred by the newly accessible railway routes of the era. Based on the physical evidence, this copy is bound in the publisher's standard blind-stamped cloth, contrasting with the more deluxe gilt-decorated presentation bindings occasionally found on the market. The volume is wonderfully illustrated with a finely engraved vignette title page by W.H. Lizars and several notable steel-engraved plates detailing the abbeys and historic towns of the Border region. Such early provincial guidebooks are genuinely scarce in their original, unembellished state, offering a tangible link to Victorian tourism in Scotland. Published in 1849, Rutherfurd’s Border Hand-Book served as an essential companion for the influx of Victorian travellers venturing into the Scottish Borders. Released at the dawn of the railway boom, it meticulously details the picturesque scenery, romantic ruins, and rich historical tapestry of the Tweed and Teviot valleys. From the storied walls of Melrose Abbey to the grand estates of Abbotsford, this guidebook offered nineteenth-century tourists a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated window into the architectural and natural wonders of the region. …
