First edition. In 1900 irrigation canals diverted water from the Colorado River to provide water for farming in the Imperial Valley of Southern California. Between 1906 and 1907 the Colorado River flooded and its entire volume flowed into the Salton Basin, creating an inland sea. "The book ably presents the role of the Southern Pacific in the memorable fight against the Colorado River break in 1906-1907" (Edwards, The Enduring Desert, p. 142).
