Scarce first edition, in very good condition. Contemporary � leather, with 5 raised bands and Scottish thistle at top and bottom of spines. Author and title in spine compartments. Date 1810 at bottom of spines. Errata page at end of Volume 1. Stamp of 19th century bookseller ?MacLehose, Glasgow? on top of front pastedown, all volumes. Leather label over spine title is absent. Light rubbing and small chips to head & tail of spines, and light rubbing to edges of covers. Light foxing throughout all five volumes, which is heavier on prelims, initial pages, and final pages. V4 has rubbing to top of joint and small 1? stain to front cover. Light pencil bookseller?s note on front free endpaper of V1. No bookplates, no markings in any volume. .Joints & hinges are sound and binding is tight on all five volumes. The Scottish Chiefs was an early historical novel, meticulously researched by Jane Porter. It is a romanticized story of Sir William Wallace (1270-1305), a knight and leader in the first war for Scottish independence. The French version was banned by Napoleon. An attractive set of a scarce, complete first edition.
