Utilizing interviews, letters, diaries, and combat reports, Gelb retells the British side of the Battle of Britain. From July 10 to October 31, 1940, the RAF and Luftwaffe fought for control of the skies over Great Britain. This battle, which lasted 114 days, was to have a critical bearing on the ultimate outcome of the war in Europe. Much like Lyn Macdonald's They Called It Passchendaele ( LJ 4/15/84), Gelb's book is composed of narratives that form a continuous story which begins at the end of the ``phony war'' and carries on through the air battles over Britain. While the story has been told many times, this account deals more with the human experiences and emotions rather than the event. Photos not seen. Recommended for most collections. George F.
