Very minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, previous owner's signature on front pastedown, textblock shows just a hint of waviness, pictorial pastedown with just a hint of rubbing at a couple of points around the edge, gilt slightly dulled, interior plates fine, else near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Dorothy Gregory [Dorothy Lake Gregory Moffett, 1893-1970] was a gifted painter, illustrator, etcher and lithographer. She received training at the Pratt Institute, at the Art Student League with Robert Henri and in Provincetown with Charles Hawthorne. Gregory illustrated more than 20 books, not to mention numerous magazines. Among the books are some well-known titles, e.g., THE LION AND THE UNICORN, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, and ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The original plates for the last book are now in the permanent collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Art. Gregory also had exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum, National Academy of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Art Institute of Chicago. She was married to the well-known artist, Ross Moffett, whose career she promoted at the expense of her own. Still, Dorothy Lake Gregory managed to make her own mark in the world of art. Their papers are in the Archives of the American Art in the Smithsonian.
