A first printing of the first edition, published in 1952, as stated on the printer's page. Numerous maps in the text and folding pull-out maps - all near fine without creases or tears. ***A very good copy in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, and the boards are clean and unmarked. The original dark red publisher's top-stain to the page block is only slightly faded. Page block edges lightly foxed. No creasing or tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions. Clean pages, with no serious creases or tears to the very thin paper - just a slight at the top edge of a few pages (only noticeable really at the top edge of the page block). ***In a very good dustwrapper, which is complete, with just a small area of surface loss, rubbing and creasing at the top of the spine and corner tips. The spine of the dustwrapper is also slightly faded and browned. No significant chips, tears or creases. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 30s. net. ***222mm x 148mm. 673 pages.
