Less than a year later, in March 1863, he received a captain's commission and joined the staff of his uncle, General George Thomas in Tennessee. After the war he achieved the rank of colonel, on the staff of Phillip Sheridan. His book is straightforward, with little to commend it beyond its avoidance of any major errors.
