- ORNITHOLOGY
The full classification of the skuas is still debated, but Dr. Furness of the Applied Ornithology Unit, Glasgow University, favours six species, of two genera, with five subspecies, based on current knowledge and his own long and dedicated field studies and research.
All of the species treated comparatively under the following chapter titles: Early history and classification, Distributions and populations, Migration patterns, Reversed sexual size dimorphism, Behaviour, Food and feeding, Kleptoparasitsm, Plumage polymorphism, Breeding systems and social organisation, Breeding - laying to hatching, Breeding - hatching to fledging, Populations dymanics, Pollutants, Skuas and agriculture, Skuas and conservation.
The text is supported by 100 maps and diagrams, 30 photographs and 65 tables. In addition, John Busby contributes 35 evocative drawings which more than embellish this erudite and readable summary of an impressive and diverse group of birds.

Store description
We have been selling books with some success for over twenty years. In 1995, we opened a bookshop in the Peak District village of Castleton and traded successfully there until 2010. In addition to selling through the shop we developed an Internet business and built a reputation for a good and reliable service. The stock, which covers a wide range of subjects, but particularly ornithology and natural history, has constantly been improved, so we now over 9000 volumes of quality books. In March of 2019 we established a shop in the attractive market town of Bakewell in the Peak District National Park. The shop is open five days a week from 10.00 to 17.00 (closed Wednesday and Sunday). Customers are very welcome to visit the shop (tel: 01629 815547) or email books@hawkridge.co.uk…
