Octavo, pp. [1-10] 1-296 [note: title leaf is a tipped in single leaf], title page printed in green and black, original orange cloth, front and spine panels stamped in green, top edge stained yellow green. First U.S. edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Metcalfe on the front free endpaper: "To Richard Ely Morse / With sincere regards / from / the author / John Metcalfe." Also signed by Morse above Metcalfe's inscription. Richard Ely Morse (1909-1986) was an American minor poet, librarian, researcher, and H. P. Lovecraft correspondent (1932-1937). Metcalfe's first book, collecting eighteen stories including the classic horror tale "The Smoking Leg." "British writer of subtle, finely crafted supernatural tales, many of them about lonely misfits out of step with their times . Metcalfe's stories, typically, rely upon fragments of letters, snatches of half-remembered conversation, liquor-dulled reminiscences, murky dreams, fleetingly described photographs, and veiled references to messages never actually quoted." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 290. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-147. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1168. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 156. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 290-91. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 4-179. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 364. Bleiler (1978), p. 138. Reginald 10083. A very good copy in good pictorial dust jacket (striking illustration by Juan Oliver on the front panel) with chipping at top and bottom edges, mostly small and shallow, but one is a larger 35x55 v-chip at upper spine end and extending onto the rear panel, centered on rear spine fold. Both the Jarrolds and Doubleday. Page editions of this book are rarely found signed or inscribed by Metcalfe and this is a choice example. (#162292). Seller Inventory # 162292

FIRST EDITION, pp. 348, crown 8vo, original black cloth, vertical rule blind-stamped to upper board, backstrip lettered in gilt, top edge black now a little faded, other edges roughtrimmed and a little toned, the front pastedown with the bookplate of Guy F. Bush, the scarce dustjacket with a design by C.R.W. Nevinson to front panel, small amount of internal tape-repair at head of backstrip panel, professional restoration to folds, very good. A scarce book, the author's debut and, as the publisher's blurb to the front flap describes, 'the first volume of short stories that has so far been admitted into the Jay Library' - a series in part distinguished by the quality of its dustjacket designs (others from the same period had work by Paul Nash and Doris Zinkeisen), here provided by the abrasive C.R.W. Nevinson, best known as a war artist. Metcalfe's work places its accent on the supernatural and macabre, as the contemporary praise of Mary Butts ('rather good stories on the usual tricks', she records in her journal) and H.P. Lovecraft (his 1927 essay on 'Supernatural Horror in Literature' identifying in it 'a rare pitch of potency' with 'graduations of horror that strongly savour of genius') - both singling out 'The Bad Lands' for particular praise.
