First impression of the first American edition, published in 1966. This is an augmented revised edition of a book that was originally published by Harper & Brothers, New York in 1951 under the title of 'Conclusive Evidence'. With eighteen illustrations, and an eight-page Foreword by the author. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, and blind-stamped 'VN' initials to the front board. The gilt is still nice and bright. Head and tail of spine slightly bumped. Boards clean and unmarked. Corners sharp. Top edge of text-block clean. Fore-edge untrimmed (as is common with American editions). Endpapers illustrated with 'Sketch-map of the Nabokov lands in the St. Petersburg region'. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Interior pages clean - no marks and no creases. Spine tight. ***In a near fine dustwrapper, which has been price-clipped at the top corner of the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete and unusually clean. There is some edge wear and creasing at the extremities, mostly at the top and tail of the spine, but there is no loss, no chips or tears, and no significant creasing. The spine of the dustwrapper is slightly marked and faded. [please see scans]. ***220 mm x150 mm. 316 pages. ***'Mr. Nabokov wrote the original version of "Speak, Memory" in America during the war when no archives, family papers or old friends were available to confirm an incident to correct or deny another, or to bring further scenes to mind. During the past several years which he has spent in Switzerland, Vladimir Nabokov has been gently checking facts, collecting additional material and tracking down family photographs in order to present a fuller picture of the background from which he sprang.' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***'The present work is a systematically correlated assemblage of personal recollections ranging geographically from St. Petersburg to St. Nazaire, and over thirty-seven years, from August 1903 to May 1940, with only a few sallies into later space-time' [Quote taken from the Author's Foreword] ***First impression of the revised first American edition. Copies in the original dustwrapper are hard to find, especially in the UK, and examples in this near fine condition are seldom encountered. A nice collector's copy. ***Of interest to collectors of Vladimir Nabokov and literary twentieth century literary first edition titles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 7964
