About this Item
First English Edition Set. Seven individual speech compilation volumes were published yearly in both the U.K. and the U.S. beginning in 1941 under the following titles: INTO BATTLE (1938-1940 speeches) [published in the U.S. under the title: BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS]; THE UNRELENTING STRUGGLE (1940-1941 speeches); THE END OF THE BEGINNING (1942 speeches); ONWARDS TO VICTORY (1943 speeches); THE DAWN OF LIBERATION (1944 speeches); VICTORY (1945 speeches); and SECRET SESSION SPEECHES (Various Dates). Unlike the English editions, which were all published by one publisher (Cassell), the American series was initiated by G.P. Putnam with BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS, then carried on by Little, Brown, up till the final volume, SECRET SESSION SPEECHES, which was published by Simon and Schuster. Their bindings are therefore not uniform. This is a very good First English edition set, all First Printings, in correct, unclipped dust jackets that still retain excellent shelf-appearance. All volumes have foxing to the prelims and fore-edges, with the exception of Volume 7, SECRET SESSION SPEECHES.INTO BATTLE is the rare First State of the First Printing, per Cohen, with the printed numerals missing on Page 78 and Page 294. The dust jacket has fractional loss at the spine head and some scattered edge-chipping. The book is in very good condition, with a lovely, small bookplate on the front free endpaper, with an inked name and gift presentation both dated "1941." The contents are fine, with light foxing to the fore-edges.THE UNRELENTING STRUGGLE is the First State of the First Printing, per Cohen, with the misprinted numerals on Page 281. The dust jacket has minor edge-chipping and a fractional loss at the spine head. The boards are faintly bowed, with some washing-out of of the blue cloth at the rear lower corner. The contents are fine and unfoxed, with an ink owner inscription on the front free endpaper, dated "1942." A charming bonus: a few extra-added wartime news cuttings are tipped-in at the rear, including a 1943 Letter to the Editor of the London Times from former-Churchill cabinet member, Lord Brabason of Tara (Minister of Aircraft Production) recalling a Blitz bombing of No. 10 during dinner with Churchill.THE END OF THE BEGINNING dust jacket is lightly edge-chipped, with a fractional loss along the upper front edge. The book is virtually mint, with foxing to the fore-edges, else fine.ONWARDS TO VICTORY dust jacket is virtually mint. The contents are fine, the fore-edges and prelims only are foxed.THE DAWN OF LIBERATION dust jacket is virtually mint, as is the book, save for foxing to the fore-edges, else fine. VICTORY is the First State of the First English Edition with the misprinted page numeral on on Page 177 missing the 1, as per Cohen. The dust jacket is fresh and bright, with light edge-wear. The contents are fine, the fore-edges only are foxed. SECRET SESSION SPEECHES unclipped dust jacket is considerably foxed and exhibits light shelfwear, with fractional loss at the spine head and the usual darkening along the spine, else fine.
