CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Vance served in the American Civil War in the 21st Ohio Infantry. He received the Medal of Honor on September 17, 1897 for his actions on January 3, 1863 at the Battle of Stones River (December 31, 1862 - January 3, 1863.). REFERENCES: KRICK 518: "Having only some seventy pages to discuss a major battle, Vance expends half of them on such topics as 'Foreign Relations in 1862.' the superficial sketch of Stone's River which he supplies is dedicated to the premise that John Franklin Miller (to whom Vance's father was an orderly) won the battle with a charge on January 2.".
