Octavo (19.25cm); peach cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in dark red on spine and front cover; red topstain; patterned endpapers; dustjacket; vi,312,[2]pp, with photographic frontispiece of a stone monkey sculpture. Light wear to base of spine, else a clean, Near Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.00), gently spine-sunned, showing moderate shelfwear, some nicks, small tears, and attendant creases; Very Good or better. The 27th Dr. Thorndyke novel, set in the world of antiques and artifacts, called by Barzun & Taylor "very nearly a masterpiece." Donaldson 36b; Hubin, p.153; Barzun & Taylor 1374.
