About this Item
Octavo, eight inserted plates with illustrations in one of various colors: blue, green, brown, etc., pictorial boards. First edition of this translation. Kalidas was an Indian author who lived sometime between about 1400 and 2100 years ago. Writing in Sanskrit, he produced dramas, and both epic and lyric poetry. He is considered the Shakespeare of Indian literature and has been translated into many languages. The author's name is also transliterated Kali-Das, Kalidasa, Kalidasas and Calidas. The seven selections here have been adapted from verse and drama forms and presented as fiction; two are of novelette length. "There are, of course, translations of some of his works by some European scholars, but they are now obsolete and are not available to the public. To remove the obstacle of language, and to present them an opportunity to be familiar with all his epics and dramas in the form of stories -- to make them interesting -- I have spared no pains to maintain the true spirit, beauty and sublimity of his works, and have included a number of his inimitable similes." (from the translator's Preface). Kalidas, indeed, was one of the first Asian writers to be translated in to European languages, with several editions in the eighteenth century. Most of the stories here have mythic, supernatural and fairy tale elements, featuring gods, demons, magic, etc. Important material, and rarely presented in this narrative form. Not in Day (1963) or Reginald (1979; 1992). A nearly fine copy without dust jacket (as issued?). Uncommon. (#113480).
