A well-known suecophile, Thomas (1839-1927) served as American Minister to Sweden and Norway in three separate terms: 1883–85, 1889–94, and 1898–1905. He wrote this popular work to promote a better understanding of Swedish history and improve attitudes towards Swedish immigrants to the United States at the end of the 19th century. Thick octavo: [4], 749, [1] pp. with a frontispiece portrait, numerous illustrations, and a color folding map. In the publisher's one-half brown morocco over brown cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles, borders, and decorations, four raised bands, beveled edges, and marbled endpapers. The spine is a touch sun faded; otherwise very good.

Established in 1981, johnson rare books & archives is located at The Book Shop in downtown Covina, about 20 miles east of Los Angeles. The shop is open six days a week and houses an inventory of some 30,000 titles, ranging from the general second-hand to the truly antiquarian.
