About this Item

Description:

First impression of the first Macgibbon & Kee edition. The book was originally published by Longmans in 1939, and re-issued by Macgibbon & Kee in 1960. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still bright. Boards clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine very slightly rubbed. Corners sharp. There is a very light vertical reading crease to the spine and a very slight lean to the binding. Internally near fine also with no ink inscriptions or annotations. No foxing. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a near fine green and orange printed dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 21s net. The correct first impression dustwrapper states just 'Again available' with no mention of any further impressions. Very slight loss to the green surface colour at the top and tail of the spine, with slight creasing and small nicks. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly creased. Slight loss to the green surface colour at the corner tips of the foldovers. No chips. No tears. No fading. Rear panel of dustwrapper nice and clean, with just some light browning round the edges, which is unusual as it has a white background. Dustwrapper bright. ***204mm x135mm. 316 pages. ***'This extraordinary book was first published in 1939, and what is no less extraordinary is that it should have received so little attention at the time. Its resurrection is timely. The author's real name is Brian Nolan, and he is a distinguished Dublin journalist who has also written books in Irish--If I were cultural dictator of England I would make "At Swim-two-Birds" compulsory reading at all our universities.' Philip Toynbee - Observer (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***First impression of the Macgibbon & Kee re-issued edition, in the correct first impression dustwrapper, in nice collectable condition. Both the 1960 and 1961 printings of this work are uncommon, especially in such nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 8161x
