With clear, mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: On April 28, six companies the 37th Wisconsin Infantry left the state, with two more following a few days later. They proceeded to Washington, D.C., and on May 30, they left for the front, assigned to the Ninth Army Corps. On June 10, the 37th marched to Cold Harbor, where they joined the Army of the Potomac. They reached the enemy lines before Petersburg and participated in the charge on the rebel entrenchments on June 17, 1864. From that time until the surrender of the Confederates in April of the following year, the regiment was frequently engaged with the Ninth Corps in the numerous battles about Petersburg and Richmond. After Lee's surrender, the 37th participated in the Grand Review at Washington and remained there until July 26, when they were mustered out of service and returned to Madison, Wisconsin, where they were disbanded. The Regiment lost 7 officers and 149 to mortal wounds, and 2 officers and 89 men to disease during their service. Co. K of this Wisconsin regiment had over 100 Native Americans among its troops, recruited from the Menominee Reservation in Keshena, WI. In 1889 a G.A.R. Post was established at Keshena which was the first Indian G.A.R. organization in the United States. The 37th Wisc. Inf. is identified as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments.
