First edition of this book of collected writings by the American Presbyterian missionary, regarding 19th-century Syrian customs and his dedicated efforts to interfere with them. Subjects include Syrian domestic life and cuisine, education and the legal system, local religious practices and conflicts. The "home life" genre of books detailing the domestic sphere of various cultures became popular in the late Victorian era. 7.25'' x 4.75''. Original orange cloth with gilt-lettered spine. 366 pages. School bookplate mounted to front free endpaper. Frontispiece and black and white illustrations throughout. Dampstain to fore-edge visible on early pages but not affecting text. Some edgewear and scuffing to spine ends, with spine lightly sunned.
