An intriguing late novel by Henry James (1843-1916), written just prior to "The Wings of the Dove" and "The Ambassadors." This tale of sexual energy baffled many of the earlier critics, but now receives more serious scrutiny. This is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition, which precedes the English version. Not common. Smooth tan cloth binding, ruled and lettered in gilt. Clean text; 319 pages.Top-edge is gilt, others rough-cut. Tiny bookseller's label on the rear paste-down. Slight bumping and a faint stain on the rear panel; else a Fine copy. Lacking a dustjacket Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 004216
